How to write better captions for short videos

A good caption does more than describe the video. It gives context, includes useful keywords, and tells the viewer what to do next.

Start with the topic in plain English

The first line should make the video obvious. If the video is about boiler noises, say boiler noises. If it is about bakery specials, say bakery specials.

Clear wording helps viewers and platforms understand the post quickly.

Add one useful detail

After the hook, add a sentence that explains why the topic matters. This is where you can mention a problem, benefit, location, product, or audience.

Do not bury the useful part under generic phrases.

Use a simple call to action

A caption can invite viewers to book, visit, ask a question, save the post, or follow for more tips.

Choose one action. Too many instructions reduce the chance anyone follows one of them.

Keep hashtags relevant

Hashtags should support discoverability, not look like spam. Use a mix of topic, location and audience tags.

Five useful hashtags are better than twenty vague ones.

Two example captions, before and after

Bakery, before: 'New cakes available this week, come and visit us!! #cake #yum #foodie #instafood #love #bakery #cakesofinstagram #foodporn #delicious #sweet'. After: 'New lemon and elderflower cake at the counter from Saturday. Light sponge, real curd, gone by Sunday last time. #yorkbakery #cakeofweek #localbakes'. The second version tells a viewer what, when and where, and uses tags people actually search.

Plumber, before: 'Boiler problems? Give us a call today for a free quote, we are the best in town! #plumber #plumbing #boiler #heating #fix #repair #localbusiness'. After: 'Boiler making a kettle noise when the heating kicks in? That is usually limescale, and it is a fix not a replacement. Based in York, happy to take a look. #yorkplumber #boilerrepair'. Same offer, but it leads with a real symptom and a clear next step.

Put the useful words first

The first line of a caption matters because it is what many viewers see before expanding the post. Start with the problem, result or reason to watch.

A caption that begins 'Three warning signs your roof needs attention' is stronger than one that begins 'Another job completed this week.'

Use captions for search as well as context

Social platforms increasingly use caption text to understand what a post is about. That means captions should include natural keywords, not just hashtags.

Write the way a customer might search: local bakery in Leeds, patio cleaning tips, TikTok video ideas for small business, or how to choose a roofer.
