TikTok video tips for small businesses

TikTok can feel chaotic, but small businesses do not need to chase every trend. Useful, clear, regular short videos can still help people discover what you do.

Make the topic obvious immediately

TikTok moves quickly. The first second should show or say what the video is about.

A clear title, first frame or opening sentence helps people decide whether the video is relevant.

Use specific topics

Specific topics often work better than general adverts. 'How to spot a blocked gutter' is more useful than 'Our roofing services'.

Specificity gives the algorithm a clearer audience and gives viewers a clearer reason to watch.

Keep captions simple

Use a caption that repeats the core topic in plain English. Add a small number of relevant hashtags.

Avoid filling the caption with generic tags that do not match the video.

Post enough to learn

One TikTok tells you very little. Ten videos around related topics tell you much more.

Look for which topics get attention, then create more videos in that direction.

What is unique about TikTok

Length: the sweet spot for the For You Page is roughly 21 to 34 seconds, with 60 seconds as the practical cap before drop-off becomes a problem. Hook: the first 1 to 3 seconds decide whether the video keeps playing, so put the topic or the surprise in frame one, not after an intro. Sound: TikTok rewards trending audio more than any other platform, so check the Discover tab for sounds in your niche and use them where they fit.

Captions: native captions max out at 2,200 characters but the first line is what shows, so put the hook there. Hashtags: 3 to 5 specific tags beat 20 generic ones, and one local or niche tag (#yorkplumber, not #plumber) usually does more work than any broad tag. Aspect: vertical 9:16, 1080 by 1920, no black bars.

Start with the first second

TikTok viewers decide quickly. The first image, title, subtitle or spoken line should make the topic obvious before the viewer scrolls away.

A good hook does not need to be loud. It needs to be specific: 'Before you book a roofer, check this first' beats 'We are here to help.'

Make videos that answer intent

TikTok is not only entertainment. People search for ideas, local services, how-to advice, product inspiration and quick answers.

Small businesses can use that by creating videos around real questions and everyday problems, then using clear captions and specific hashtags.
